Poland offers customs and VAT relief for aid to Ukrainians

Poland is offering exemptions on VAT and customs duties on goods imported to provide humanitarian aid to Ukrainian citizens. Poland recently opened its borders to refugees from Ukraine. 

Normally, goods imported into Poland from outside the EU are subject to import VAT and duties. Polish authorities say that importers can apply for exemptions, under specified conditions. 

Who can apply for a customs duty exemption? 

According to the guidance, the exemption on customs duties is available to state organisations and registered charities. 

The exemption applies to basic necessities, such as food, medicine and clothing. 

In addition, the exemption is available on imports of goods used for charitable fundraising. Office supplies are also exempt if they are for use by charitable organisations. 

VAT exemptions on basic goods

Charitable organisations can also apply for a VAT exemption if they have the appropriate accounting processes in place. (Contact a VAT specialist for more information on how to meet all VAT requirements.) 

Items include food, medicines, sanitary items, among other goods used for preserving health. 

Note that in order to secure an exemption, importers must comply with all the relevant regulations set out by Polish authorities. Among the requirements, you must include the appropriate recipient on the customs declaration.
